Perilous Pursuit: Sand Mining in Kigezi's Tunnels. By Davis Owomugisha

Sand mining, a critical industry in many regions, has taken a dangerous turn in some parts of Kigezi, as locals resort to mining sand from tunnels deep underground in their quest for survival. While the need for economic sustenance is understandable, the practice of tunnel sand mining comes with severe risks to both the environment and the miners themselves.

Kigezi, known for its picturesque landscapes and fertile farmlands, has a significant demand for sand, which is a vital resource for construction and infrastructure development. Traditionally, sand was extracted from riverbeds and open-pit mines. However, as these sources became depleted, some locals turned to tunnel sand mining as an alternative.

Tunnel sand mining involves digging underground tunnels to access sand deposits. While it may seem like a solution to the shortage of sand, this practice poses several hazards. Firstly, tunnel collapses are a constant threat, as the structures are not always stable. This puts the lives of the miners at great risk. There have been reports of injuries and even fatalities as a result of tunnel collapses in the region.

Additionally, tunnel sand mining can have dire consequences for the environment. The extraction of sand from underground disrupts the natural landscape and can lead to soil erosion and instability in the surrounding areas. It also impacts underground water tables and can cause water pollution when chemicals are used in the extraction process.

Furthermore, this unregulated mining practice often leads to disputes among the local community, as it can damage farmland, water sources, and infrastructure. This, in turn, disrupts the social fabric of these communities.

To address this issue, it is crucial that local authorities and environmental agencies take action. They should promote sustainable sand mining practices, enforce regulations to prevent tunnel sand mining, and provide alternative livelihood opportunities for those engaged in this hazardous activity.

In conclusion, while the pursuit of survival is understandable, tunnel sand mining in Kigezi poses significant dangers to both the miners and the environment. It is essential that a balance is struck between economic needs and environmental sustainability to ensure a better future for the region and its communities.
